Magic News: 10/19
With Pro Tour Kaladesh in the books, there’s a bit I’d love to talk about.
Pro Tour Kaladesh
First thing first: while I didn’t get to see a lot of the Pro Tour coverage, I did watch a fair portion of the top 8. I really enjoy the new top 8 bracket system they use for the top 8, and very much enjoy that having a high seed becomes super important in that you have fewer rounds to play compared to the people in say 7th or 8th. I’ve been a fan of the direction they’ve been going ever since they moved it to best of 5 series, with no sideboarding until game 3. Best of 5 feels much better, and mitigating the impact of the sideboard is a big deal as well (though less so in Standard than in a format like Modern).
Now, on to how Standard as a format looks! You can find the top 8 decklists here, in case you haven’t seen them already. The great thing about this top 8 is how diverse it is! We have multiple control decks, a few aggro decks, and even a combo deck. One thing is for sure: you’re pretty well off if you had Torrential Gearhulks before this past weekend, as they spiked real hard (more than doubling in price).
Going forward, I do think that it’s a nice to see that Control is very viable right now, and it very much makes me want to play a real control deck again at some point (but I don’t play Standard, so Frontier for me I guess). That being said, for those of you that may be going to play in GP Providence, I would not expect to see these control decks be as popular as some may think. It’s tough playing control decks well, and it’s even tougher to keep up that level of performance over a long GP day. It’s much easier to jam a deck like RW vehicles, which can actually punish your opponent quickly if they stumble. It’s also nice having time to go and get food, which is something you may not really have while playing control.
Granted, if I was going to play this weekend, I’d be sleeving up Torrential Gearhulk, because I am that kind of person.
Fairly minor notice on this: originally the spoilers for this year’s Commander product were going to start towards the end of the month. Apparently they are going to be starting next Monday, 10/24. That’s a week earlier than originally, and I won’t complain about that.
I continue to plug away at the updates to the Stores section, with most stores being added at this point. I’m curious to see what everybody thinks about the updates, or if there are any suggestions. Then it’s just a matter of figuring out what to do with the main stores page….
